International Course NEWS No.78

In the international course, students use a curriculum focused on English language learning and cross-cultural understanding. We offer a varied and interesting course of study alongside many specialized subjects.
One of the most popular classes is Cross-cultural communication. This class is an elective class for 2nd-and 3rd– year students.
Notable Features of this class:

  • An “English language only” policy
  • Team-teaching by a Japanese English teacher and a native English instructor
  • Students can improve 4 skills, foster critical thinking, and improve their knowledge in many different areas.

This class is organized as follows:

Introduction

Textbooks published in foreign countries are used in this class. Students learn about various cultures from all over the world.

The content includes a wide variety of topics like geography, history, and the environment.

 Pair Activity

Students practice using new vocabulary and expressions through English communication with their class partners. They also hold three-minute conversations to build skills for talking with anyone.

Debate in English (three-four members)

Debating helps students gain new perspectives on different cultures and social or societal problems.

Theme examples:
“New Year’s food (Osechi) should be cooked at home to maintain cultural traditions.”
“It is a good idea to spend money on restoring and maintaining monuments like Nagoya Castle.”
“Japan should move to green energy as quickly as possible, no matter the cost.”

First, students research a theme in advance. Then, they form arguments from both sides—the affirmative and negative sides—in class. By expanding their understanding of the theme, they present each argument within their groups. Through the process of developing refutations, students can foster critical thinking and improve their knowledge in many different areas.
