Welcome Reception, Orientation, Icebreakers & Campus Tour
In the afternoon, we took the city bus to Waikiki and had Scavenger Hunt at the International Marketplace. The students completed their missions by talking to store staff in English. The clerks at the Hawaiian stores were all cheerful, friendly, and very kind.
July 23rd (Tuesday) [Day 2: Morning English Classes, Afternoon Conversation Partners]
Full English classes began, and the morning session included Reading Strategies, Writing for an Audience, and Transactional English. The students took various types of English classes. In Transactional English class, they learned how to order shaved ice using Matsumoto Shave Ice’s actual menu. The next day, they went to the real shop, the famous ‘Matsumoto Shave Ice’ and actually placed their orders.
In the afternoon, they enjoyed a conversation partner activity in English with HPU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as local people.
Wednesday, July 24th [ Day 3 Morning: North Shore shopping, Afternoon: English classes ]
In the morning, we went to the North Shore of Oahu. We took the HPU bus and arrived there in about an hour. North Shore is home to beautiful towns, nature, and beaches. There is also a shopping street along with a marketplace. Using the expressions the students practiced the day before, they ordered shaved ice at Matsumoto Shave Ice.
On the way back, we luckily saw adorable sea turtle families.
In the afternoon, the students returned to the university and took three classes: English Conversations, American Culture, and Hawaiian Culture.
